Wingan Inlet

A little while ago we had a few days down at Wingan Inlet.  Its an interesting place on the East Coast of Australia facing into Bass Strait.

There is a seal colony just off the beach on some small rock islands.  Those islands are covered in seals.  The noise they make can be heard at the camp site a couple of kilometres away.

The diving is pretty good also.  Lots of abalone, which is pretty unusual because the professional divers and poachers usually keep the reefs picked clean.  I think its just a bit to far from boat ramps and launching places for causal access.

I took the sea kayak out for a trip around the seal colony.  Pretty scary in a boat I was not familiar with in a place that I was not familiar with with possibility of unpredictable wave action and currents due to the island.  I nearly got wiped out coming back in when a couple of larger waves from an unexpected direction pushed me to close to the rocks on the north side of the river mouth.  It was worth it though.
