I got onto this page through Boat Bits.

This is a quick summary of the essential points when setting up and using a mast and rig and sails.  Essential points

  • Use Dacron only as the sail cloth.  It lasts a really long time
  • A self tacking staysail is a really good idea
  • Make sure backstay tension is right so that the forestay is correctly tensioned when furling the jib.
  • Make sure all chain plates are lined up with mast, and use toggles as necessary to get the right alignment.
  • Norseman fittings are a really good idea also – can be replaced anywhere
